The Alpha House Gallery, was established in the Dorset market town of Sherborne in 1991 by the writer, sculptor and painter Tony Birks. His mission was to show contemporary visual arts, specifically ceramics, paintings and sculpture of "West End of London" quality to the Wessex region of England. Its spacious interior and white walls are ideally suited to the display of contemporary works of art.
The gallery was taken over in 1995 by Tim Boon, who had been running the Amalgam Gallery in South West London since 1973. As a specialist studio pottery venue, Amalgam established a national reputation. Added together then, is a cumulative experience in the field of contemporary ceramics spanning 30 years.
The gallery is particularly strong in non utilitarian container forms and has played a part in establishing the reputations of many British potters, including James Campbell, Gabriele Koch, Jim Malone, Mike Dodd and Sandy Brown.
Other notable ceramics exhibitors include William Marshall, Ewen Henderson, Colin Pearson, Takeshi Yasuda, Mick Casson, Phil Rogers, John Ward and Nicholas Homokey.
The Gallery holds eight exhibitions per year, two of which are mixed or thematic. The others are solo, two or three person. We publish an annual calendar of exhibitions which can be viewed on our website www.alpha-house.co.uk or posted to interested parties.
